Yes, you have read the title well. We don’t mess with this last one 5G analysis report by Opensignal. It was only released yesterday and we are just as surprised as you are to hear that Kuala Lumpur ranks second in 5G download speed (Mbps). Charts are based on the largest cities in the Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (APAC).
As you can see from the graph below, Seoul takes first place with 453.1 Mbps but KL came second as mentioned earlier at 376.6 Mbps. That said, KL got the top spot in terms of 5G download speed with 52.8 Mbps. Compared to Seoul, that’s a bit far to see the country at just 40.6 Mbps and to make things intriguing, our neighbor Singapore averaged 266.3 and 24.3 Mbps for download and upload speeds. 5G download respectively.
According to Opensignal, KL is tipping the rankings simply because of the specific market situation in Malaysia. As many of you know, only one company (YES) uses the unique wholesale 5G network of Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). Soft launch started in December 2021, only selected number of places have 5G such as KL, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya. Therefore, only certain people can enjoy 5G at the moment.
With this, it is only natural that Malaysians who were able to experience 5G felt a huge improvement in downloading compared to 4G. However, this is still the first phase of 5G for Malaysians. As mentioned by Opensignal, there’s only 10.9% of the time 5G is available, which is really low in the chart, as well as a 2.5 rating in terms of 5G range.
