The most-streamed series of 2021 in the US wasn’t Squid Game or You or WandaVision – but each of them ranked among the top original titles.
The overall title doesn’t belong in a single show, but rather in a title: Criminal Minds, the long-running former CBS procedural that currently calls Netflix home. According to Nielsen, viewers spent nearly 33.87 billion minutes watching the show’s 322 episodes last year. Truth be told, the seven most-watched titles on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix are totally obtained shows.
Squid Game: A Close Second
The best single series is Lucifer, which clocked 18.34 billion minutes of review time for the year – which included the arrival of its 6th and final season in September. Squid Game, which became a verbal peculiarity after its September 17 premiere on Netflix, is second among the top with 16.43 billion minutes.
The Korean hit topped Nielsen’s week-by-week chart for a while after its delivery and effortlessly led the final quarter among all single titles. Still, since Nielsen believes it reviews all episodes of a series in its streaming ratings, Lucifer – which had most of its slate accessible for the entire year – ranks first among the top.
Criminal Minds and Lucifer come far behind the pioneers of streaming in 2020: The Office (57.13 billion minutes) – which has since moved to Peacock – among the series obtained and Ozark (30.46 billion) among the first. Crowds didn’t stream less substance in 2021 than they did in 2020, but with more stages securing themselves and more programming than at any other time to watch, they expanded further.
Netflix dominates the series rankings, but a few unique shows from different decorations made the top 15. Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale (8.56 billion minutes), Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso (8.16 billion) and WandaVision from Disney+ (7.28 billion) all beat the top 15. Disney+ also had 11 of the top 15 films in the Nielsen ranking, led by Luca at 10.59 billion minutes of survey time.
Nielsen’s most streamed titles of 2021 are below. Ratings remember shows and movies for Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video so to speak.
