Lourdes closes Carle Place to reach the States

BEACON – For adults, 2002 probably doesn’t seem that far off. That is, until you remember things from the period that might have faded from memory a bit.

The average cost of gas then was $1.56 per gallon. You remember ? Nickelback, Ja Rule and Nelly owned the Billboard charts. Memory?

“It was so far away, none of these children had been born,” Notre Dame de Lourdes boys’ football coach Roy Kievit said of his players. “Most of them didn’t even have a twinkle in their parents’ eyes yet.”

Lourdes had also conquered its region and was part of the state’s elite teams.

This one doesn’t have to be a trip down memory lane, just a step back to Saturday. Because the Warriors, continuing an incredible run in the playoffs, are heading to the state semifinals for the first time in two decades.

The defense again dominated and Lourdes scored timely goals, earning a 3-0 win over Long Island’s Carle Place in the Class B regional final at Beacon High School.

“It’s a great time for our school and the whole community,” said senior Karl Menuau. “It’s amazing, to be the new kids on the block in (Section 9), and now we’re representing the section at the state level.”

New Kids on The Block came long before 2002, if any youngster is wondering.

Noah Balicki, Jack Yough and Menuau each scored a goal and Lourdes picked up their eighth consecutive shutout in the playoffs to create those comeback vibes.

What this means

The Warriors will face Lewiston-Porter of Section 6 in a state semifinal next Saturday at 11:15 a.m. at Goshen High School.

Lourdes edged top-ranked Briarcliff in penalties in the sub-region and the victory, said goalkeeper Ned Van Loan, “has put us in the clouds in terms of confidence”. There is a pervasive belief within the team that, if they are at their best, they can overcome any challenge.

The Section 9 venues host all four state finals, so Lourdes will only have around 40 miles to go and believe they have a near-home advantage again with the support of their giddy fans.

“It’s super special,” Kievit said, “for us, the families involved and, at this point, maybe even the region.”

The boys from Lourdes and Beacon, as well as the girls’ soccer team from Millbrook, will represent Dutchess County in their respective state tournaments next weekend.

Van Loan, who is always showered with praise for his performance in the sub-region, was again superb. The elder made 11 saves, including a spectacular leaping catch near the right post with 16:33 to go, to preserve the shutout.

“He was a rock star,” Kievit said. “He literally saved our season many times over.”

The only downside to their football success is that Van Loan, who is also a member of the football team, will probably not be able to qualify for the section final on Friday. Indicate the title on the line and all.

Lourdes were unaccustomed to Carle Place’s sagging defensive style and took some time to adapt, but their own defense kept him scoreless. Sam Escaleras, Alex Hooper and Yough were excellent at rolling back the Frogs’ drives in the first half. Yough also made a defensive save, deflecting a shot that was tagged for the corner.

Balicki broke through with 1:08 left in the first half, firing from near the right sideline and sending the shot flying over the keeper’s outstretched arms and into the far corner.

“Noah pulled a rabbit out of the hat and it got us going,” said Menuau, who slipped a shot past the right post keeper to make it 2-0 in the 53rd minute.

Yough created the margin from a free-kick with 20:01 remaining, sending a low lining between the defenders that crept into the left corner.

By the numbers

They said it

“It’s electric,” Van Loan said. “Last year we didn’t go past the quarter-finals (in Section 1), now we have a chance to win a state title. It’s unbelievable.”

“We still have two games to play so we can’t get carried away,” said Kievit. “Our work is not finished.”
