Gran Turismo 7 retains top spot as classic Switch games surge | UK Boxed Charts

Gran Turismo 7 holds the top spot for the third consecutive week in the UK box-tops, according to data firm GfK.

The PlayStation racing game has had a tough week, including a glitch that rendered it unplayable for more than a day and renewed controversy surrounding in-game microtransactions. Nonetheless, it continues to do well at retail and holds the No. rank despite a 42% drop in sales week-over-week.

It is ahead of Elden Ring at No. 2, which actually rose one spot despite sales falling 25% week-on-week. Last week’s big new release, WWE 2K22, drops to No. 3 after a relatively mild 44% drop in sales.

The big shake-up in boxed rankings this week is due to a number of price promotions for major Nintendo Switch games. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond rose 21 places to No. 5 after a 564% jump in sales, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury rose 15 places to No. 6 due to an increase in sales of 288%, and Pokémon Shining Pearl re-enters the Top 40 entirely at No.9.

Metroid Dread, which is now at No. 14, also re-enters the charts. The Nintendo Switch game is now the third best-selling Metroid game in the franchise’s 35-year history, and that’s excluding digital (that’s boxed retail sales only).

All of this activity means Mario Kart 8: Deluxe is taking a rare week outside the Top Ten, dropping five spots to No. 11 after a 20% drop in sales week over week. The drop in sales comes despite the arrival of new Mario Kart DLC this week – the game’s first expansion in nearly five years.

There were a few new games on the charts. The highest new entry was Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, which landed at No. 8. 73% of the game’s boxed sales were on PS5, 18% on PS4, and 9% on Xbox.

And Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach reached No. 10 on the charts. Published by Maximum Games, 70% of sales were made on PS4, and the rest on PS5.

There’s another game making its chart debut this week – My Universe: Puppies and Kittens on Nintendo Switch, also published by Maximum Games. The track was actually released in November, but it finally made it to the charts this week at No. 37.

Elsewhere in the Top Ten, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is up one spot at No. 4, but sales are down 23% week over week. And Horizon Forbidden West fell to 7th place after a 41% drop in sales.
