First place on the line tonight with the Charleston vs. Booneville showdown at Bearcat Stadium

Coaches can now talk about the game that fans and sportswriters have been discussing for months after the reclassification brought Booneville into the same conference as Charleston.

“It’s a game you try not to think about, but you know it’s there,” Booneville coach Doc Crowley said. “It’s gonna be fun.”

Oh, it’s sure to be fun tonight, especially with the senior night activities at Bearcat Stadium. Booneville and Charleston are 6-1 overall and 4-0 in 3A-1 conference play. Each team recorded shutouts last week with Booneville 35-0 against Mansfield and Charleston 57-0 against Hackett.

Thus, the paths were cleared and the debris swept away for this long-awaited confrontation.

Lots of history here, folks, between two small school powerhouses in Arkansas. Plenty of star athletes too, with quarterback Brandon Scott leading for Charleston and running back/linebacker Dax Goff leading for Booneville.

Scott is a two-time all-state player who has thrown for 52 touchdowns and rushed for 28 scores in his career. Goff, a junior who received scouting attention from Kansas State, rushed for 1,348 yards and 17 touchdowns this season and for 2,295 yards and 29 touchdowns overall with another year to play.

As if this game couldn’t get more interesting, please note that Booneville coach Doc Crowley is a Charleston graduate and Charleston coach Ricky May is a Booneville graduate.

Conference championships still matter and Charleston probably felt disrespected when Booneville was picked first and Charleston second in a 3A-1 conference coaches preseason poll. It’s Charleston’s chance to show they’re still No. 1 in the 3A-1, but Booneville rarely loses at home and the Bearcats will want to send their winning seniors in their final regular-season home game.
