Disney+’s listing of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness confirms when exactly the movie takes place in the MCU timeline.
The official Disney+ listing for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness confirms the film’s place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.
Following the film’s addition to the streaming service, fans quickly discovered that Doctor Strange’s final adventure takes place between Eternals and Hawk Eye, which are set for fall 2024 and December 2024 respectively. Multiverse of Madness also takes place after Spider-Man: No Coming Homewhich apparently ends around the same time as Hawk Eye.
The Master of the Mystic Art’s second film takes place after No coming home won’t surprise MCU fans given that the stories largely feed off of each other. Following Doctor Strange’s tampering with the boundary between realities in Spider-Man: No Coming Homehe is forced to face the consequences of his actions after nearly causing an incursion. Multiverse of Madness sees the titular wizard, once again played by Benedict Cumberbatch, answer for his reckless behavior, a case made more complicated as he is pursued by a corrupt Wanda Maximoff aka The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premiered to largely positive reviews from fans and critics, many of whom praised director Sam Raimi for the film’s elegant presentation. Despite this praise, many audiences were left behind by a story they felt was uneven in its pacing and character work, with fans criticizing Wanda Maximoff’s decline into madness as a disservice to the character.
Despite complaints about the Scarlet Witch arc, Olsen said she was happy with how Multiverse of Madness portrays his character. “I am [satisfied]”, Olsen said. “I think somehow it had to end where it ends at some point, and I’m curious where we go from there.” Regardless of the actor’s thoughts on Wanda’s fate, it’s unclear when fans will next see the Scarlet Witch appear on the big screen.
As for Cumberbatch, the acclaimed actor has already professed his love for the role of Doctor Strange, noting that he’s set to reprise the role for at least another decade. “Absolutely. Absolutely,” enthused Cumberbatch. “If they keep me, and that, interesting and evolve it and try to fulfill his potential as a character, I think there’s a lot of places for him to explore. So yeah, go for it .”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now streaming on Disney+. The film arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD on July 26.
