Bearcats’ 2nd-place finish combines for best team ever

Birmingham, Alabama. – Both the men’s and women’s track teams finished in second place after Day 2 of the AAC Championship Meet, recording the best combined result in Cincinnati history. The men’s team also scored the highest point total in UC history.

The head coach Susan Seaton said of the results: “I’m really proud of the team and the way we fought today and all the progress we’re making and can’t wait to see what happens during the outdoor season.”

Four more conference championships came home with the Bearcats today with Ellie Leather in the mile race (4:41.17) and 800m (2:08.01), freshman Steven McElroy in the 400m (46.99), and Annika Kinley and Alyssa Matheny tied for first in the high jump (1.76m). They will join Austin Edwards (long jump) and the women’s medley relay composed of Leather, Carmen Licht, banks of faith and Sam Mikula as this year’s conference champions.

RATING PERFORMANCE
Women’s thousand race:

Leather set a new meet record with her time of 4:41.17, winning the event by more than three seconds. Senior Lauren Kemper set a personal best over six seconds to place sixth in 4:52.98, making his fourth record in Cincinnati history.

High jump women

The Bearcats had co-champions atop the podium with rookie Kinley and senior Matheny at this year’s conference championship. The two jumpers are tied for first with a jump of 1.76m (5-09.25).

800m women:

Leather led the field to another conference championship in the 800 with his time of 2:08.01. Teammate Carmen Licht also scored for the Bearcats with his eighth-place finish in 2:14.33.

400m men:

McElroy won the conference championship in his first-ever conference meeting with UC, clocking a lifetime best 46.99, which now ranks him second all-time in Cincinnati. Junior Chris Borzor finished sixth in the event in 47.75.

400m women’s sprint:

Junior banks of faith ran a lifetime best 53.63 to take second place in championship competition, also taking second place on UC’s all-time top ten list.

Women’s shot put
Jane Sensibaugh fought his way to second place on the podium with a throw of 15.66m (51-04.50). The three women entered in the event scored points with Alexanadria Hunter and Hannah Jackson ranking sixth and eighth respectively.

Senior Kennedy Marable won a medal in his last conference meeting with his best jump of the season at 13.08m (42-11.00).

Men’s shot put
Sam Meece won his second silver medal of the weekend in the shot put with his throw of 16.51m (54-02.00). Korbin Spencer scored more points for the Bearcats with his fifth-place finish and throw of 16.14m (52-11.50).

200m sprint men

Borzor took second place in the event with a photo finish, winning his heat of the final in 21.05, just 0.01 seconds off third place. McElroy finished fifth with a 21.37.

Men’s Triple Jump
Carlos Kouassi finished second in the event with a jump of 15.46m (50-08.75). It was only his second indoor meeting with the team this season.

Heptathlon Men

Senior cannon riddle finished the remaining three events of the pentathlon to climb to third place with a score of 5266. His third places in the pole vault and 1000m gave him the points he needed to secure a place on the podium. First-year student Dominique Hall set a new UC freshman record in the heptathlon with a score of 5152.

mile men

Sophomore Tyler With, who currently holds the UC mile record, rode a close race to finish third with his time of 4:05.41.

FOLLOWING

Leather’s current national ranking qualifies her to compete in the NCAA Championship on March 11-12. The official list of qualifiers will be announced on Tuesday. The rest of the squad will kick off the away season on March 17and at the Houston Spring Break invitation.
