Afterlife sequel will take place in New York

Good news Ghostbusters fans: the sequel to Ghostbusters: After Life is set in New York City and has a working title – Firehouse.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a box office hit when it released in 2021, managing to tap into the nostalgia of previous films while adding a younger cast to the mix. It wasn’t to everyone’s taste, but at ShortList Towers we found it fun, even if we missed the New York setting.

The film’s sequel was revealed as part of Ghostbusters Day and was the first of many new Ghostbusters announcements, with news that there will also be a new animated show on Netflix and an animated movie in the works.

If that wasn’t enough, a comic book adaptation is also on the way, and a VR game is currently in production.

But let’s start with the sequel to Ghodstbusters: Afterlife. Director and co-writer Jason Reitman explained of the recently announced sequel, “Last we saw Ecto-1, it was returning to Manhattan: the home of Ghostbusters. This is where our story begins. The codename is FIREHOUSE.

It has been confirmed that the film will again be written by Reitman and Gil Kenan and while we do nothing about the plot. Ernie Hudson who plays Winston Zeddemore in the films hinted at a return, noting, “Winston Zeddemore may have changed his flight suit to a work suit, but he’ll still be a Ghostbuster…I haven’t I’m entitled to tell you a lot more than that, but rest assured, we’ve got plenty of Ghostbusting to come, I’ll just say, if need be, the flightsuit still fits.

As for the new animated show, it will be a Netflix exclusive and will “navigate an uncharted era of the Ghostbusters canon.” The animated film will be a spin-off, “with all new characters and a whole new take” according to its creators.

There will also be a VR game, available on Meta Quest 2 and PlayStation VR2, and Ghostbusters returns to comics, with a new take on Dark Horse. This is expected to be an in-canon limited edition series releasing in late 2023.

“Between games, comics, TV and movies, we’ll tell the untold story of Ghostbusters while reaching into the future with characters you haven’t met in places you haven’t been” , writer Kenan said of all the announcements.

Oh, and to honor the life of original director Ivan Reitman who passed away this year, Hasbro has created two figures of the director as Ghostbuster, which look awesome.
