101 Wildcats earn a spot on the SEC Fall Sports Academic Honor Roll

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A total of 101 University of Kentucky student-athletes have earned a spot on the 2021 Fall Sports Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, announced Tuesday by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. The United Kingdom had the third most winners in the league.

The Fall 2022 SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the Spring, Summer, and Fall 2021 terms. UK had 11 men’s cross country, 13 cross country women’s football, 38 from football, 16 from men’s football, 15 from women’s football and eight from volleyball. Among other qualifications, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average for the previous academic year or a 3.0 cumulative GPA in order to be named to the roster.

In addition to academic success, Kentucky teams also had success on the competition fields in the fall. The men’s soccer was 15-2-4, won the Conference USA Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 before being knocked out by eventual champion Clemson in overtime. Volleyball was 25-5 and won its fifth straight SEC championship. The football went 10-3 – only the fourth 10-win season in school history – and capped the season with a victory in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl and national ranking No. 18/15. The women’s cross country finished third out of 40 teams at the NCAA regional and the men’s finished ninth out of 39 teams at the regional.

UK players on the SEC Honor Roll continue the trend of strong academic news:

  1. In November, it was announced that British student-athletes had broken the school record for federal graduation rate and tied the school record for NCAA graduation rate. The UK has broken or equaled the GSR school record every year since the NCAA began measuring the statistic in 2005.
  2. Including the start of winter 2021 and graduation last spring, 115 Wildcat student-athletes graduated in calendar year 2021.
  3. In December, 395 Wildcats achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester, including 107 Cats who achieved 4.0 for the semester. This continued UK Athletics’ streak of 19 consecutive terms with a department-wide GPA of 3.0 or higher.

UK Athletics supports the academic success of its student-athletes through CATS – the first university center of its kind dedicated solely to student-athletes. CATS is an important component of the UK Student-Athlete Experience division, committed to preparing student-athletes to enter life after the UK.
